Croatia, Dubrovnik: 2s, 3s, & 4s ending with 1s

The 2 of us arrive in Dubrovnik late afternoon. New city for both, but only new country for Eric, that is once he pees twice of course.

After finally a shower for me and snack provided by hostel owners, we props to country #8.

Prior to April, Eric & I had seen each other in 2 countries. A mere 2 months later, we have put that to the power of 3 - no, we have multiplied that by 4 - nooo, we are not crazy we swear... we hope.

To anybody out there who remembers our epic 50km bike ride, challenged to ourselves by ourselves at the ripe young age of 12 & 13, done with 1 bottle of water each, on mountain-type bikes, with 1 granola bar and before the time of cell phones, you'll be happy to hear nothing has changed... except maybe his voice ?!

We went into the old town to watch the USA-Ghana world cup. Met 2 other Americans, Jewish medical school students nonetheless, with whom we had some wonderful conversation - so our trip friends are now equally balanced between development nerd and science nerd (recall with whom we spent time in Belgrade).

A delightfully deep, but not long enough sleep later and we would find ourselves back in old town, eating the most delicious bacon&egg concoction either of us have ever had (so serious), and meeting up with our friends. The 4 of us decide to escape the frenzy of tourists by walking along the walls of the fortress, which run high above the town and provide a magnificient lookout.

The other beauty of 4 is that when we'd walked enough to stir up an appetite, 4 different seafood dishes can be ordered and shared. Mussels. Check. Octopus salad. Check. Seafood risotto. Check. Grilled squid in delectable garlic sauce. Double check. Ohmygoodness good. Thank you Dalmatian coast for your cuisine.

Coffee together and Eric would take off to bus back to Sarajevo and eventually back to Qatar. See you in country #1 in August!

We're down to 3, but that doesn't stop us from finding a secluded little rock 'dock' behind a garden where we could hop into the salty, yet refreshing Adriatic. So. Peaceful. Some time later, a mini-hike through the rocks would provide a beautiful view as well. And then the rain would provide an excuse to say our goodbyes and well wishes so I could again be a 1 and catch my overnight bus to Zagreb.

Last bit on numbers... Although Eric & I have known each other since we were 1, we have always lived in 2 different countries, and seen each other 2 times a year, at best, for no more than 3-4 hours.

But in the past 3 months, we have seen each other on 3 occasions, in 2 * 3 countries and for many, many hours of both insightful, delightful, and spiteful (he makes fun of me a lot) conversation. It has been truly wonderful to reconnect with my only 'since I was 1 yrs old' friend. :)
